Tykwer and Owen Go International
Tom Tykwer is among my favorite directors. I like his style of filming and as he’s grown and evolved, it’s been easy for me to remain a fan. Der Krieger und die Kaiserin (The Princess and the Warrior) is among my all time favorite films. The pacing of it resembles that of Perfume: the Story of a Murderer but it is less macabre.
Anyway, I’m excited about his latest, The International. It features one of my favorite actors, Clive Owen. It’s kind of sad that Owen has been stereotyped as an action guy. He seems to lean toward the jaded, world weary tough guy these days, but the first film I saw him in was Greenfingers and he played a gardener. (Greenfingers is counted among my all time favorites as well.)
In The International, an edge-of-your-seat action thriller, Interpol Agent Louis Salinger (Clive Owen) and Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Eleanor Whitman (Naomi Watts) are determined to bring to justice one of the world’s most powerful banks. Uncovering illegal activities including money laundering, arms trading, and the destabilization of governments, Salinger and Whitman’s investigation takes them from Berlin to Milan to New York and to Istanbul. Finding themselves in a high-stakes chase across the globe, their relentless tenacity puts their own lives at risk as the bank will stop at nothing – even murder – to continue financing terror and war. It isn’t scheduled for release until February 13, 2009. Gives me something to look forward to though.
