Movie Companions

Many people like background noise, something to keep them company while they perform chores or menial tasks. Music and television are the most common methods of background noise, but movies can also fill the role of companion.

One of my favorite recreational activities is working jigsaw puzzles. I find them relaxing and doubly so with a familiar movie playing along. When I need to focus on something other than puzzle pieces, I can cast my eyes toward the television and find comfort in the characters sharing my space.

Of course, for such a purpose you don’t want to plug in a dvd you’ve never seen before. It has to be something you’re familiar with and know what to expect. However, it can’t be something that demands attention. There are some movies, no matter how many times they’ve been viewed, you just can’t take your eyes off of.

That being said, I’ve found my comfort movies are those with cool (and sometimes cheesy) dialogue. While looking at something other than the screen you can picture it in your mind and the dialogue makes you smile, or frown.

My current favorite is Transformers. Michael Bay tends to make good comfort movies. Armageddon is a former fav. The combination of action, humor and human interest in both is compelling.

Other favorites include classics like Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Rio Bravo and The Magnificent Seven. Films from more recent history are good too. Braveheart, Apollo 13 and The Mummy are all fantastic comfort movies.

I know, with my penchant for jigsaw puzzles and watching movies repeatedly, my life couldn’t be considered exciting by most. Trust me, I’ve lived the exciting life. Puzzles and movies are more to my liking. Am I alone in choosing movies for companions or do you choose them too?

I drive my husband crazy because I will “watch” movies (or any TV) while reading a magazine or clicking away at my laptop. Later he’ll ask if I’ve seen such and such a movie and invariably I’ll answer, “I’ve seen parts of it.” No doubt he’s heard that line several hundred times!

LOL, Brenda. I do that with television shows all the time. A friend will ask if I saw such and such show and I’ll say parts of it. ;) Thanks for stopping by!

The Princess Bride, Ferris Buller’s Day Off, and Caddy Shack.

Wow, that kinda oddly sums up my personality.
