Family Fun On Nim’s Island

Is it just me, or has children’s movies taken a turn for the better in the past few years? A recent news story on television noted that film makers are aiming for lower ratings and younger viewers because parents are actively searching for quality movies for their children. That could very well be true.

One film that I recommend for families is Nim’s Island. It’s a charming tale about fears (both rational and irrational), fighting for what you believe in and the importance of family.

Nim is eleven and has lived on an island with her scientist father for as long as she can remember. No one is aware of Nim’s Island and they’ve created their own little world. Her father’s contacts bring them supplies regularly and they stay in touch with the outside via satellite. It’s quite a nifty little setup; I’d like to live there myself.

Her father reluctantly leaves her alone for two days as he goes out to search for a new protozoa plankton, that he plans to name after his daughter. A sudden storm strands him at sea and Nim must fend for herself after the storm. She proves herself quite capable by ousting some cruise ship invaders with the aid of her animal friends. These are some remarkable animals. ;)

The author of Nim’s favorite books contacts the scientist by email for research purposes while he is away and Nim enthusiastically helps. When her father doesn’t return when expected and she suffers a minor injury, she appeals to the author for help.

Abigail Breslin is the precocious Nim and plays the part to perfection. Gerard Butler is her father, as well as the hero of her favorite books, and his performance solidifies the fact he can act in any genre. Jodie Foster plays the author and as usual, she does a superb job. My only complaint is, I think she is a bit too old for the part.

This is a perfect movie for children. The themes are positive and the action is filmed with just enough intensity to capture the attention but not scare. If you’re looking for a movie to distract the whole family, Nim’s Island is a good bet.
