One particular article in the December issue of the Writer magazine really spoke to me. The Spirit of Christian Fiction by Randy Rudder. When I read it I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. I’m just beginning my journey of writing a Christian fiction novel and this article is exactly what I needed.
The first books I read in this genre were historical and they blew my mind. The Silence of John, Madman
and Two Women Of Galilee
opened my eyes to more than a spiritual comfort but to possibilities for my own writing. I resisted because I didn’t think I had anything to offer. Several years later that’s no longer the case. I do have an insight that should be shared.
Making the decision was only half the battle. I had to decide which sub-genre. According to the article, “The end-times novels that have been so popular over the past decade may have played out for the time being…” I don’t think I’m quite ready for that anyway and the experimental stories like The Shack are a little out of my league as well. I tried my hand at the urban fantasy version of Christian fiction but felt I wasn’t ready to do it justice just yet. So, contemporary it is.
Faith for some comes easily, for others not so much. I’m hoping my novel will show the many faces of faith from it’s birth to one’s dependence and comfort with it. With a bit of romance, friendship and humor juxtaposed with conflict it can be done.
Oh, and the most valuable thing I found was a list of agents for Christian fiction. I’ll definitely utilize it once this novel is complete.

Missy:
You may want to read my new release, Angela 1: Starting Over, which fits into the kind of thing you seem to want to write. Maybe it will give you some useful ideas. I say jump in and write. Sketch out some characters, choose a location, do a very brief outline of the plot. Once you have that, the story will come. Good luck!
Thanks for the encouragement, David. I know I’m on the right track with this novel. I’m usually in a rush to do everything so this time around I’m taking it slow and dedicating myself to each step of the process. I’ll check out Angela!
