In the process of developing characters for my novel, I’m also developing the setting. It’s one of my weaknesses. The November / December issue of Writer’s Digest Magazine has a great exercise to stretch the setting description skills.
Pick a scene you’ve already written and rewrite it using as many of your point-of-view character’s senses as you can. Go beyond the visual. Describe what the character can hear, feel, taste, smell and even sense?
See if this exercise uncovers details that will “draw the full picture for” your reader.
